Jake Peavy pitched against his
former team for the first time last night and he managed perfectly fine. The right-hander was solid for the 2nd
straight outing and helped the Red Sox win 7-2 and win another series with an
opportunity to sweep Sunday afternoon.
Peavy went 7 innings, giving up
just 2 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4. He was at 99 pitches after 6 innings but came
back out in the 7th and was able to work around a 2-out single and
get out of the inning with just 10 pitches.
John Farrell doesn’t usually let his pitchers work that late into games
with pitch counts that high, but he trusted Peavy and Peavy rewarded him.
The strong outing lowered Peavy’s
ERA to 3.18 and his WHIP to 0.96 in his 6 starts since joining the Red Sox. It’s looking like the trade was definitely a
win for the Sox.
Craig Breslow and Drake Britton
finished the game allowing no runs and only 1 walk (Britton). They struck out one each and faced only 7
batters. The bullpen has been lights out
as of late.
Offensively the Sox banged out an
impressive 7 runs on 15 hits and were 5 for 16 with runners in scoring
position. The score could have been even
worse as the Sox left 11 men on base.
Jacoby Ellsbury went 3 for 5 with
2 runs scored and an RBI out of the lead off spot. Shane Victorino continued his hot hitting
going 2 for 5 with a run scored. David
Ortiz and Mike Napoli each went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a walk.
Jonny Gomes pitched in with a 2
for 5 with a run scored and an RBI and David Ross went 2 for 3. Xander had his best game offensively as he
went 2 for 3 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.
The only 2 Red Sox to not record
a hit were Dustin Pedroia who chipped in with an RBI and Will Middlebrooks who
went 0 for 4.
They’ll go for the sweep tonight
as Felix Doubront will take the hill opposed by Andre Rienzo. Rienzo moved into a starter position after
Peavy was traded and has been so-so in the role.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
Jacoby Ellsbury. He went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and an
RBI. He had his 30th double
of the year and after a very bad game the night before came out and got the job
done.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
Will Middlebrooks. He went 0 for 4 with a strikeout and hasn’t
been very good the last week.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Xander Bogaerts RBI single in the
bottom of the 5th to put the Sox up 6 to 2 and basically out of
reach for the White Sox with the way Peavy was handling his business.
NEXT
Sunday, September 1st, at home vs.
the Chicago White Sox.
