Shane Victorino was a one-man
wrecking crew on Tuesday night as his 2 homers and 7 RBI fueled a 13-2 victory
over the Orioles.
Victorino finished the night 3
for 3 with 4 runs scored, 7 RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch. He was on base 5 times with a double (his 23rd)
and 2 homers (10 & 11). It was a
career night as his 7 RBI is a career high.
The Flying Hawaiian has been a great addition to the Red Sox this after
many doubted that he was the same player he was when he was a Philly.
The entire offense was on point
Tuesday night as they banged out 13 runs on 14 hits while walking 4 times. They were 5 for 9 with runners in scoring
position and had 8 RBI with 2 outs.
Dustin Pedroia went 3 for 5 with
a run, 2 RBI and 2 doubles. Jacoby
Ellsbury went 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored.
Mike Napoli went 1 for 5 but hit his 17th homer of the
year. Jonny Gomes went 1 for 5 with 2
RBI and Will Middlebrooks went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Salty chipped in with a hit and Stephen Drew
walked twice in the big win. Big Papi
was hitless in his return from an injury but did drive in a run and walk once.
With this much run support Felix
Doubront just had to cruise to a victory but instead he put in a solid effort. He went 6 and 2/3 innings giving up just 2 runs
on 4 hit while walking 1 and striking out 7.
His pitch count was high, 111 pitches, as he did run into some deep
counts with hitters but he pitched well and earned his 10th victory
of the season while lowering his ERA to 3.74.
Matt Thornton got out the only
man he faced in the 7th and Drake Britton retired the O’s in order
in the final 2 innings while striking out 1.
It was an all around great game
as the Sox took the first game of the series in a tough match-up against a very
good Orioles team. With 29 games
remaining, it is now officially crunch time.
They’ll go back at it again on
Wednesday night as the Sox send John Lackey to the mound against Bud
Norris. Lackey was spectacular his last
time out against the Dodgers but didn’t get anything to show for it. Hopefully he’ll get it done again and the
offense will help him out.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
Shane Victorino. It was a career night for Shane as he belted
2 homers, a double and 7 RBI.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
David Ortiz. No hits in his return from an injury. Really no one deserves LVP but I have to give
it to someone. Sorry Big Papi!
PLAY OF THE GAME
Shane Victorino’s 1st
homer of the night in the bottom of the 3rd inning as he put the Sox
up 3-2 and they wouldn’t look back from there.
NEXT
Wednesday, August 28th, at home
vs. the Baltimore Orioles.
