It’s been 12 days since Ryan
Dempster plunked A-Rod and had his worst start of the season against the
Yankees. He earned a 5 game suspension
that night got some rest and looked fresh in his return to the hill on Friday
night.
Dempster didn’t hit anyone,
carried a no-hitter into the 5th inning and left in the 7th
with a lead as the Red Sox put down the White Sox 4-3.
It looked dicey to start as
Dempster walked the first 2 batters of the game he settled down and got Alexei
to hit into a double play and was able to get out of the inning unscathed. His final line was 6 and 1/3 innings, 3 runs
on 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 5.
He needed some help from his bullpen and they did what they do best,
shut the game down.
Junichi Tazawa went 1 inning and
gave up just one hit. Franklin Morales
faced one batter and retired him and Koji Uehara notched his 15th
save of the year retiring all 4 batters he faced, striking 2 of them out.
The offense wasn’t great but did
just enough to get some runs on the board.
They only had 6 hits and only one was for extra bases. With runners in scoring position, they were
bad yet again, going 2 for 8 and stranding 10 runners on base. Luckily they had some clutch 2 out RBI as all
4 of their runs were scored with 2 outs.
Shane Victorino continued his
torrid second half going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, an RBI and a walk. He also stole his 18th base of the
year. Dustin Pedroia went 1 for 2 with a
double, the lone extra base hit, and walked twice. Stephen Drew went 1 for 4 and Will
Middlebrooks went 1 for 3 with a walk and his first stolen base of the season.
David Ortiz, who’s been in an
awful slump, went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and 2 walks. The 2 run single hopefully will get him
hitting again as the Sox need a productive Big Papi in their lineup. Mike Napoli went 0 for 3 but did drive in a
run.
It was a nice win to start of the
series as they’ll go at it again tonight with Jake Peavy going against his
former team. He’ll be opposed by John
Danks.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
Shane Victorino. He should be called the Flaming Hawaiian
right now because he is ridiculously hot.
Another 2 hits and an RBI in the game.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
Jacoby Ellsbury. He went 0 for 5 at the top of the lineup with
2 strikeouts.
PLAY OF THE GAME
David Ortiz’s 2-run single in the
bottom of the 4th to put the Sox up 4 and on their way to victory.
NEXT
Saturday, August 31st, at home vs.
the Chicago White Sox.
