The Red Sox bats stayed hot as
they supplied the power in the rubber match against the Angels. They hit 4 homers to down the Halos 10-5 and
get yet another series win.
It was another offensive show of
power as every Red Sox starter except Mike Napli had a hit but he did walk so
all Sox starters reached base. The story
of the day was power as the Sox blasted 4 homers and also had a double and a
triple on the night.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia went 2 for
4 with 2 homers and 4 RBI. He hit his 7th
and 8th homers of the year and is quietly having a great season so
far. His batting average is up to .273
and he has 8 homers and 25 RBI.
David Ortiz went 2 for 4 with 3
RBI and his 13th homer of the season. He also moved past Mike Napoli for team lead
in RBI with his 48th of the season.
It truly is remarkable he’s the team lead seeing as how he missed the 2
and half weeks of the season.
Mike Carp also had a homer and
went 1 for 3 with 2 runs and an RBI.
Jacoby Ellsbury went 1 for 4 with a triple, RBI, walk and his 24th
stolen base of the year. Daniel Nava had
a hit and his 40th RBI of the season. Jose Iglesias just continues to hit as he
went 2 for 4 with a double. He’s not
batting .446 on the season and if the Sox were smart they’d keep him in the
lineup until he cools down.
Ryan Dempster was given a huge
lead for the second consecutive start and he pitched pretty well again. He went 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 runs
while walking 2 and striking out 6. He
gave up 2 homers but against the Angels that’s going to happen.
The bullpen was mostly good save
for Koji Uehara who pitched only 2/3 of an inning and gave up 2 runs on 1 hit
and walked 2. Koji’s been a bit shaky as
of late with 2 of his last 3 appearances being hit hard.
The story of the day thought was
offense and the Sox showed the league just how potent their bats have
been. They lead all of baseball with 336
runs scored and 330 RBI. Over their last
eight games they are averaging 7.63 runs a game. Dustin Pedroia and Jose Iglesais both have 13
game hitting streaks and it seems everyone is hitting right now.
It was a nice series win and the
Sox own the best record in the American League with a 1 and ½ game lead in the
AL East. They still have a lot of work
to do as it doesn’t get any easier for the rest of the month starting tonight
with a trip to Tampa
Bay to face a tough Rays
team.
I also wanted to mention just how
good Mike Trout is. It was my first time
watching him for more than 1 game and I am truly impressed by this young
man. He was an absolute beast this
series as he went 7 for 14 (.500) with 4 doubles, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. His outfield skills are amazing and I can’t
wait to watch this kid play for 20 more years.
The Angels truly have a gem here.
John Lackey (3-5, 2.79 ERA) will
take the hill against Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.39) in what figures to be a pitcher’s
duel. Both pitchers have been hot as of
late and Cobb will look to cool off the red hot Sox bats.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Salty had 2 homers and 4 RBI on the day and
looks like a completely new hitter this year.
He seems to have much more confidence and is not striking out nearly as much
as he did last year.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
Mike Napoli yet again. Mike went 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts. He now has 89 strikeouts on the year and is
struggling as of late. I know he’s a
streaky player but made it’s getting frustrating watching him swing and miss at
the frequency he’s been doing lately.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Big Papi’s 3-run homer in the
bottom of the third to start the power surge by the Red Sox. It put the Sox up 4-1.
