RESULT – LOSS 4-1
C.C. Sabathia looked like vintage
C.C. last night. He has had a up and
down season so far and his track record against the Red Sox (8-12, 4.72 ERA in
25 starts) isn’t all that impressive but last night he put on a pitching clinic
against New York’s rivals.
C.C. went 7 and 1/3 innings
giving up only 1 run on 6 hits striking out 10.
He looked dominant and showed no signs of a diminishing arm. His off speed pitches continually had the Sox
off balance and his performance came at a big time as it stopped the Yankees
current 5 game losing streak and started the series off on a good start for
Yankees fans.
On the hill for the other side,
Jon Lester didn’t look good at all. He
didn’t have command last night and walked 4 batters. Lester went 6 and 1/3 innings, gave up 4 runs
on 6 hits and struck out 5. His breaking
balls continually missed the strike zone and he battled all night but couldn’t
get strikes consistently and fell behind almost every batter he faced.
With C.C. stifling the offense
Lester needed to be perfect and unfortunately he was not. The bullpen didn’t allow a run for 1 and 2/3
innings but it was already too late as the Sox just couldn’t get anything going
against Sabathia.
Jacoby Ellsbury fresh off his
historic night was out of the lineup and is day to day with groin issues. He said he felt a slight pull on the fifth
steal of the night and groins are very scary situations. They could be lingering issues and just as
Ellsbury was getting hot he gets hurt.
The Sox are hopeful that he won’t hit the disabled list but I’d be
surprised if we see him at all in this series.
Daniel Nava took over the leadoff
spot for Ellsbury and promptly went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts. The Sox don’t really have any other options
at leadoff and Nava has been pretty good with the stick this year so he’ll have
to do in Ellsbury’s absence. Hopefully
he’ll have better days than this going forward.
Jackie Bradley Jr. took over in centerfield and went 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts. This is Bradley’s opportunity to show why he should be there and that he can be a good substitute for Jacoby Ellsbury but last night wasn’t a good night.
Overall the Sox were 1 for 8 with
runners in scoring position and struck out 12 times on the night. The only 2 Sox players to have any success on
the night were Dustin Pedroia who went 3 for 4 and Jose Iglesias who went 2 for
3. Pedroia had 2 doubles and Napoli also had an RBI double but struck out 3 times on
the night.
Jose Iglesias is making it tough
on the Red Sox as since his call up and take over of third with Middlebrooks
out, he’s been hitting and fielding spectacularly. His average is up to .435 and he doesn’t look
like he’s slowing down at all.
Defensively he’s so smooth that you would never know he didn’t play
third full time.
David Ortiz and David Ross each
had a hit as well but the 1-2 hitters combined to go 0 for 8 with 4
strikeouts. The Sox just couldn’t get
anything going and couldn’t string hits together in a row.
The good thing is that there are
2 more games of the series and C.C. won’t be pitching in them. Phil Hughes will go for the Yankees and Felix
Doubront for the Red Sox. Both have had Jekyll
& Hyde seasons so far with a couple good outing and some god awful ones as
well. Should be a slugfest and hopefully
the Sox bats will wake up after being stifled last night.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
Dustin Pedroia. The one consistent hitter in the Sox
lineup. He went 3 for 4 and scored the
only Sox run. He had 2 doubles and seems
to always be hitting.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
Daniel Nava. 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts in the leadoff spot
filling in for Ellsbury. Let’s hope he
can turn it around because there really is no other option to fill in at the
top of the order.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Bottom of the second, Ichiro
Suzuki singled in Vernon Wells for the second run of the game. It would really be all the Yankees would need
as C.C. was in cruise control from there on out.
