Clay Buchholz looked like his
normal self last night in the Bronx as he had
his first start from a nagging injury that sidelined him for 11 days. He was dominant at he was credited with a
complete game shut out as the game was called after a third delay in the bottom
of the sixth.
Buchholz went 5 innings, throwing
only 71 pitches giving up only 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 4. He had 10 ground balls outs and seemed to
have his cutter and changeup working perfectly.
He is now 8-0 on the season with a league-leading 1.62 ERA. Absolutely unbelievable as the shortened game
gave him this 4th career shutout.
It was nice to see there was no rust from the irritation of the right AC
joint. Those freak injuries worry me
about Buchholz because of his injury past.
Offensively the Sox had 3 runs on
8 hits with David Ortiz and Jose Iglesias providing some fireworks. Each hit a homerun and drove in one. It was Jose Iglesias’ first of the season and
2nd of his young career.
Seriously? Can you send him down
at this point? I don’t think so. Sorry Will Middlebrooks, I see a prolonged
stay at Triple-A for you at this point.
David Ortiz hit his 10th
of the year and Mike Naploli went 2 for 3 with an RBI as well. Daniel Nava, Dustin Pedroia and Jarrod
Saltalamacchia each had hits in the contest as well. Mike Carp was the goat of the night going 0
for 3 with 3 strikeouts.
Hiroki Kuroda didn’t look awful
going 5 and 1/3 innings and giving up 8 hits and all 3 runs. The long ball burned him last night as he did
strike out 5 batters. He seems to be
giving up a lot more fly balls this year and that will result in some homers in
Yankee Stadium.
Not much else to talk about in
this game. It was delayed to start and
had 2 other delays during the game. It was
a big victory for the Sox as they now have a rare off day today but starts a
tough schedule that beings Tuesday as the Texas Rangers comes to town followed
by the Los Angeles Angels. June will be
a tough month but it’s nice to get 2 big wins against the Yankees to start it
off.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
David Ortiz. Seems the players don’t like getting an elbow
to the face as that’s twice in a row that that LVP became the MVP the next
game. Ortiz went 2 for 3 with a run and
an RBI. He had his 10th homer
of the year.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
Mike Carp was lost at the plate
last night going 0 for 3 with 3 strikeouts.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Jose Iglesias’ 5th inning
leadoff homer to deep left. It was an
impressive shot for a light hitting infielder.
It put the Sox up 2-0 and with the rain coming in, provided the cushion
that Buchholz needed to cruise to his 8th win of the year.
NEXT
Off day.
