RESULT – WIN 11-1
The kids are alright. The Red Sox bounced back in a big way
Saturday night as the young guys, Jose Iglesias and Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mike
Napoli deflate Yankee fan’s spirits. The
Sox banged out 1 runs on 18 hits and put on an offensive show Saturday night.
The only Red Sox starter without
a hit on the night was David Ortiz, who went 0 for 3 but walked twice. One of the walks was intentional to load the
bases for Mike Napoli who promptly unloaded them with his 5th career
grand slam to start the rout. It was the
second time this year that Napoli hit a
homerun after a David Ortiz intentional walk.
The other came on May 1st against the Blue Jays and Napoli unloaded a three run shot. Napoli finished
the night 3 for 5 with 4 RBI.
Daniel Nava went 4 for 6 with 2
runs and 4 RBI out of the leadoff spot a day after going 0 for 4. He hit his 8th homerun of the year
and now has 37 RBI on the year. Mike
Carp went 2 for 3 with a walk, double, run and RBI before being pulled for
Jonny Gomes (who went 0 for 2). Stephen
Drew had 2 hits including his 4th homerun of the year. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had 1 hit in 5 at bats
but struck out 3 times. David Ortiz also
had 3 strikeouts on the night and the team as a whole struck out 12 times. These guys strikeout a lot but last night
they also had 18 hits and 1 runs and strung hits together to get a big win.
The kids, Jose Iglesias and
Jackie Bradley Jr. went 5 for 10 with 4 runs and 1 RBI out of the 8th
and 9th holes. Bradley had 2
doubles and looked a lot more comfortable at the plate than in the past few
games. If Bradley can get going, maybe
we’ll see a Wally Pipp situation for Jacoby Ellsbury. Jose Iglesias can’t be sent down at this
point right? Not with what he is doing
at the plate and with the glove. Maybe
Middlebrooks needs an extended stay in Triple-A to figure out his hitting situation.
With all that offense, Felix
Doubront’s performance kid of got lost in the mix. Doubront pitched pretty well Saturday
night. He went 6 innings giving up 1 run
on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6.
Felix owns the Yankees as he’s 2-1 with a 2.52 ERA in 9 games against
them in his career. He seemed like he
was struggling with the strike in the first few innings but calmed down and
pitched to contact when the Sox got him a big lead.
The bullpen nailed the door shut
as Junichi Tazawa, Craig Breslow and Koji Uehara didn’t let up any hits or runs
and struck out 4 in 3 innings to complete the game. Uehara looked brilliant striking out 2 of the
3 batters he faced.
Phil Hughes was roughed up for 5
runs on 7 hits but a positive note was that he also struck out 7 batters. If not for that grand slam, his line would
look much better. Reliever Adam Warren
was creamed for 6 runs on 8 hits in only 3 innings of work.
The Sox will send their best pitcher
so far this year, Clay Buchholz, to the mound looking for a series win against
the Yanks tonight. He’ll be opposed by
Hideki Kuroda who has been the Yankees most consistent starter so far this year
as well. If the Sox can close out the
series, they’ll be up by 3 games. With a
tough June schedule coming up, I would say they need a win tonight.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
Daniel Nava. A day after getting an elbow to the face, he
responds by going 4 for 6 with 2 runs and 4 RBI. He hit his 8th homer of the year
and continues his fantastic season.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
David Ortiz. He did walk twice but was the only starter
without a hit and struck out 3 times.
The fear of Ortiz was enough though as it directly led to 4 runs as he
was intentionally walked and big Mike Napoli smacked grand salami.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Mike Napoli’s third inning grand
slam that broke the game open to 5-0 and started the rout of the rival Yankees.
