Is there anything more American
than baseball on the 4th of July in Boston at Fenway Park? I don’t think so. I was at the game yesterday afternoon baking
in right-field box 93 seeing the early fireworks the Red Sox put on display for
a spectacular 4th of July win and sweep of the Padres.
The Sox mashed out 18 hits, 8 of
them extra bases and were 5 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Every Sox starter had at least 1 hit and
everyone except one (Brandon Snyder) had 2.
Jacoby Ellsbury went 3 for 4 with
3 runs while knocking in one. He had his
2nd homer of the season and was a catalyst all afternoon jump
starting the offense as he also was hit by a pitch and on base 4 times. David Ortiz was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and his 19th
double of the year. Dustin Pedroia went
2 for 4 with 2 RBI and Jonny Gomes fresh off his game winner went 2 for 4 with
an RBI.
Young catcher Ryan Lavarnway went
2 for 4 and Jose Iglesias went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Shane Victorino went 2 for 4 with an run
scored and Mike Napoli got in on the action going 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored.
Brandon Snyder only had one hit
on the afternoon but it was a big one as he hit his first homer of the season
and first of as a Red Sox player. It was
a booming shot out to right-center field.
This kid looks like he wants to stick around as he has 6 RBI in his
brief stint with the Sox this year.
Rookie Allen Webster collected
his first win of his career and although he was a bit wild (4 walks) he went 6
strong innings giving up only 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 5. The walks caused his pitch count to soar to
97 through only 6 innings but he continued to work around those walks and get
out of tough situations. I see a lot of
promise in this kid and it must be nice to have that first win under your belt.
Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect 7th striking out 2 batters and that is a great sign for the Sox. They need Bailey to be a reliable arm out of the pen and with the long balls he’s been giving up lately it was nice to see a dominant outing.
Alex Wilson pitched an inning and
a third giving up 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 1 and Craig Breslow
finished off the game with 2/3 of an inning of no runs.
It was a perfect 4th
for the home team. Lots of hits, a sweep
and a 8-1 homestand! The Sox now will
embark on their west coast trip with some momentum and can hopefully keep
things going.
They’ll send Felix Doubront (4-3,
4.22) to the mound tonight against the Los Angeles Angels. Doubront’s been pitching very well as of late
and he’ll need to continue that against an Angels team that seems to have found
its footing. After a rough start, they
are now only 3 games under .500 at 41-44 and have been rolling as of late. Opposing Doubront will be C.J. Wilson (8-5,
3.63). He’s been their most consistent
starter and last time out against the Astros went 7 innings giving up 0 runs
and struck out 10. He pitched back on
June 8th vs. the Sox at Fenway and took the loss as he went 5
innings and gave up 3 runs on 8 hits.
Let’s hope the Sox can light him up yet again.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE –
GAME MVP
Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury was on base 4 times yesterday and
scored 3 runs and drove in another.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
I’m not giving an elbow to the
face to anyone. There really isn’t
anyone that deserves it.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Dustin Pedroia’s 2 run double in
the bottom of the 1st to jumpstart the rout of the Padres.
NEXT
Friday, July 5th in Anaheim vs.
the Lost Angeles Angels.
