The offense was abysmal but the real story was
John Lackey and the injury to his right arm.
They’re calling it a right biceps strain but he is going back to Boston
for an MRI and it plain didn’t look good.
After not throwing in a major league game for 17 months, it’s hard not
to feel sorry for the guy. I know that
the Boston faithful seem to hate the guy but this is just awful. Let’s hope the news is good and it is just a
strain because if not he’s probably looking at a career ender here.
Lackey looked pretty good on the game. He only was able to get through four and a
third innings before the injury hit but he struck out 8, gave up 5 hits and 2
runs but routinely hit 92-94 with his fastball.
Hopefully, it’ll be a quick injury and we can get some more quality
innings out of the big Texan.
Unfortunately when Lackey came out of the game
the incredibly bad Alfredo Aceves entered the game and proceeded to throw
gasoline on the fire. Aceves went 3 and
two thirds allowing 3 runs on 3 hits walking 2.
While the box score doesn’t look terrible he just didn’t look good
again. He’s incredibly wild and I just
don’t see what Farrell see’s in the guy.
The real story is who terribly bad the offense
looked. J.A. Happ looked like vintage
Pedro Martinez allowing only 1 hit and striking out 6 in five and a third
innings. Toronto’s bullpen was just as
good having 3 relievers come in and strike out 5 and only allow 1 hit the rest
of the game. That’s right folks, 2 hits
in the entire game for the Sox. One by
Ellsbury in the first inning to lead off the game which the Sox left out there
and another by Pedroia in the ninth, in between that, a lot of UGLINESS!
Not much else to talk about with this game. Just forget about it and move on to the
rubber match on Sunday. If the Sox can
get a win they can have back to back series wins to start the season, something
they haven’t done in 3 years.
SHAVING CREAM PIE TO THE FACE – GAME MVP
I’d like to put none here but I have to give it
to someone so I’m going to give it to John Lackey for giving a good start and its
unfortunate we couldn’t see what would have happened the rest of the day. 4 1/3, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 walk and 8 strikeouts
was a great start though and hopefully we’ll see more of him this year.
ELBOW TO THE FACE – GAME LVP
I’d like to put the entire starting lineup here
for the horrendous offense showing yesterday but since I can only give it to
one guy, I’ll single out Mike Napoli who was beyond awful going 0 for 4 with 3
strikeouts. Mr. Napoli, that’s the hat
trick my friend.
PLAY OF THE GAME
Top of the fifth with one out. John Lackey throws the second pitch of the at
bat and immediately grabs his right forearm.
It looked bad and so far the Sox have been able to avoid the injury bug
to their pitching staff. To be
successful their pitching staff will have to stay healthy.
NEXT
Today, Sunday, 4/7 in Toronto vs. the Blue
Jays. Sox going for the series win today
with big Jon Lester on the mound opposing last year’s NL Cy Young Award Winner
R.A. Dickey.
